Have you ever wanted to go up to the person in charge of separating families across the country on a daily basis, to see if they really understand what they are doing? Have you ever felt so frustrated with a system of deaf ears, denials and deportations that you just wanted to cry out? Have you ever wondered if Secretary Napolitano actually hears the voices of those who face ICE’s ravenous deportation machine?

Well, we can assure you that when Secretary Napolitano came to present on a panel at Duke University, she (and the hundreds in the audience and watching online) heard Javier’s story and saw his sister Griselda and our own Alicia stand up and call for his release. Javier’s story isn’t the only one out there, but it does raise some important questions.

We wanted to know- what is the point of a recommendation from DHS if local ICE offices don’t comply? Who is really in charge of deciding which families get to stay together and which are ripped apart? Do ICE offices really report to DHS, or are they ‘going rogue’?

See the video clips and read what we heard in Confronting Secretary Napolitano.

Hey y’all- if you don’t get our newsletter, you might have missed out on the exciting event going on today. Secretary Napolitano will be speaking at Duke University. We will be there with Javier’s sister, some Duke students and other supporters hoping that Secretary Napolitano will listen to Griselda tell what her family is going through while Javier faces deportation and ask for his release. (livestream starts at 5:30pm Eastern, and you know we’ll be tweeting it)

How can y’all help us out on this? Take 3 minutes of your day. Seriously- 180 seconds. Make a couple of phone calls to Secretary Napolitano, urging her to release Javier. This would be a big help to get her attention and hopefully help Javier home to see his family- including his newborn daughter (whose birth he missed because of ICE)… Phone numbers and sample script are below.

Thanks and <3

TAKE ACTION - MAKE A CALL:

Call DHS – Janet Napolitano 1-800-821-9358
Call ICE – John Morton 1-800-394-5855

Sample Script: “I am calling to ask that Javier Santos (A#200-203-135) be released from ICE custody immediately. Javier has two U.S. citizen children. His wife just gave birth to their third child while Javier was in detention. The baby was born with health issues and his wife developed diabetes because of the stress. Javier is a good father and his children and wife need him desperately. President Obama said he wasn’t going to deport people like Javier. Release Javier Santos from detention.”

Javier's family fights for his stay

Regardless of the issues at stake, our nation’s political debate seems to be fueled by bloated jargon and calculated strategy. Among them, the “family unit” has become a political label, a contrived moral badge and, at times, a shield, used by conservatives, liberals and all that fall in between.

So why is this nation still tearing families apart?

As we’ve detailed in an earlier post, Javier Santos entered the Mecklenburg County Jail in Charlotte, NC, after being stopped for a broken tail light—and consequently arrested—while driving home from work on Sept. 6. That same day, ten undocumented youth were arrested for participating in a sit-in. Members of the NC DREAM Team met Javier in jail. Overnight, the team was released. Javier was transferred to an Atlanta detention center, where he sits awaiting deportation. (Click here to sign the petition to bring him back.)

Education Not Deportation (“END”) is a national campaign to prevent the deportations of young people, thereby allowing immigrant youth to continue their lives in the United States, pursue higher education and achieve their dreams.

Viridiana, the queen of FWYH. The first person I had ever heard come out in a very public way in North Carolina. Part of the Georgia Peaches. Most importantly (to me, anyway) one of the founders of NC DREAM Team, and an awesome friend <3
So glad we got her back :-)

Mo. Awkward fan-boy moment for a second: I still remember hearing his story for the first time and being amazed. I <3 Mo- even when he’s talking trash :-p
This photo was seriously only a minute or so after talking to him. He was still chanting “UNDOCUMENTED! UNAFRAID!” as they lead him towards the police wagon.
